Internship Computer Science

  • On-site
    • Leiden, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands
  • Bio-IT/ICT

Job description

Are you a (HBO) Bachelor student in Computer Science or Bioinformatics and looking for a final internship?

Join our team at GenomeScan!

Who are we?

GenomeScan is a service provider for innovative DNA and RNA analyses. We are dedicated to providing fast, affordable, and high-quality patient diagnostics and genetic laboratory research. Our diagnostic services play a crucial role in identifying the causes of diseases and providing support for individual treatment plans. We also undertake projects for research groups and pharmaceutical/biotech clients.

Implementation of a laboratory process automation framework
The GenomeScan ICT team contributes to its diagnostic genomic sequencing (NGS) services by providing both the hardware and software solutions to process big genetic data sets used by health care (diagnostic labs), biopharmaceutical companies (clinical studies), and academic research.

The operational flow starts with project management and communication, sample intake and processing, DNA sequencing, data analysis and interpretation, and delivery of the test data and results to the clinician or researcher.

ICT plays a crucial role in this operational chain and to support all work in this flow we are deploying a laboratory information management system (LIMS) and automation frameworks with focus on data management, automation, generation and processing of sequencing data, and analysis and transfer of data. Typical tasks supported by this system are planning of DNA sequencing experiments by combining hundreds to thousands of samples on a sequencing flow cell, deconvoluting the raw data from these flow cells to individual samples again, performing quality checks, analyzing the data, and transferring and archiving the genetic data.

The major systems are a LIMS that handles the first part of the logistic flow focusing on sample registration and traceability. The remainder of the logistic flow, starting with the loading of the DNA sequencer, is handled by an automation framework. A customer web portal handles inbound and outbound communication with the customer. All systems consist of a web-based user interface that communicates via API calls with its backend and other systems and processes.

We are looking for an enthusiastic ICT intern!

Project: Implementation of a laboratory process automation framework

Within the project there are several topics on which an internship project can be based. Projects can be based on individual modules such as project management, quality control of data, transfer of data to customers, data analysis, and involves both backend and front-end development. In the project, you will be trained in business or operational processes, software development, data management, and user interface design.

Within the scope of the selected topic, existing processes need to be analyzed, improvement or solutions proposed, followed by a design and implementation, and thorough testing (entire software development life cycle). This requires close collaboration with other software developers and bioinformaticians in the team.

What do we offer?

  • An exciting internship where you can improve your programming skills, learning python language, Javascript, Celery job scheduling, cloud storage, software development life cycle etc. You will learn to present your work and write a report in a scientific format.

  • You will receive intensive guidance in your training and personal development by a professional and friendly team of colleagues.

  • The work experience will serve as a jump start for your continued career.

  • You will receive a monthly internship allowance.

  • A workplace within walking distance of the centre and central station of Leiden.

Working at GenomeScan means working in a professional and culturally diverse organization with ~65 employees, both young and more experienced, centered around an informal work environment. We are constantly seeking ways to improve our services by developing and validating new products and methods. We bring the best out of each other and enjoy celebrating achievements together!
